Break My Heart for the Things That Break Yours

Break My Heart for the Things That Break Yours

I prayed “break my heart for the things that break yours,” but I pretty much had my mind made up about what those things were: kids.

Jesus loves the little children, they are precious in His sight, and so on.

And these little children—these “foster kids”—had only received abuse and neglect from horrible parents when they should’ve received safety and love from good parents like me. But have no fear: I was coming to the rescue.

Problem is, I had prayed the kind of prayer that God loves to answer and so, in spite of myself—in spite of my ignorance and arrogance—God began to break my heart for something different, something more.

Because Jesus doesn’t just love the little children, and he didn’t just come to save the precious and easy to love. Jesus loves the child abuser, the addict, the domestic violence victim, the prostitute, the homeless, the poor, the mentally ill, the immigrant, the sick, the struggling, the sinful.

Jesus loves me and you and “them” so deeply that He gave His life to make The Way for forgiveness, salvation, rescue, adoption.

So now my heart breaks for the kids. But it also breaks for the moms, the dads, the siblings & grandparents & aunts & uncles & cousins. The family.

And my heart doesn’t just break, it beats. It beats for kids to be loved, for parents to be healed, for families to be restored. And for all people to know the great love of Jesus.
