MELISSA: ON ADOPTING AS AN ADOPTEE + BEING ENOUGH FOR YOUR KIDS + MINDFULNESS
Melissa Corkum is a joy to talk to. Nothing is off limits with her, and I just love that. Melissa is a mom to six through adoption and birth, as well as an adoptee herself. She’s walked through the hard, hard of adoption, and it’s brought her great wisdom that she loves to share. She shared it on this epi, for sure, as we talk life an as adoptee (growing up and through parenthood), keeping your cool with your kids, realizing you can’t fix your adopted children, practicing mindfulness, and releasing the guilt. Melissa is sagacious and funny and real about it all. It’s a good one, friends.
• The intro song, The Source, is brought to you by one of the best new worship bands out there, The Evidence. Yes, the frontman is my (talented, brilliant, adorable, Jesus-loving) cousin. No, that's not why I love them.
• As we talked about mindfulness, Melissa shared her favorite app to practice on a daily basis: Stop, Breathe, and Think. Practice breathing along with the bubble - try for ten, if you can!
• Melissa (along with former guest, Lisa Qualls) have an amazing resource for adoptive parents, The Adoption Connection.
• Melissa’s read + loved When We Were Young by Karen Kingsbury (“inspirational” fiction) + Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss (non-fiction/learn-how-to-negotiate-with-your-kids-parenting-book).
• Like most of my guests, Melissa is watching This Is Us, and she’s listening to Pentatonix Christmas (Their rendition of Hallelujah? Yes.).
