Giveaway #2: What you can learn from my four year old & MudLOVE
My kids go to AWANA. If you don’t know what AWANA is, think boy/girl scouts, sub Bible memorization for fire-building skills, and you've pretty much got the picture. One week my four year old son was asked to bring in a picture of something he was thankful for for a group project. His choice? A picture of water. I tried to coax him into a picture of our house or his Ninja Turtle toys or me or anything else that didn’t make it look like the only thing his mom provided for him was water. But he was certain of his choice.
This choice of water wasn’t the random whim of a four year old. My son had learned to be truly (four-year-old-sized) grateful for water. As much as I was embarrassed by his choice, I recognized that I was to “blame.” I was the one who put pictures of children in Africa lining up to pump water next to his bathroom sink. I was the one who plopped him in front of videos of women walking miles to the nearest well. I was the one who gave a speech about the privilege of clean water when he complained that his was warm or dirty or not-in-the-one-specific-batman-cup-they-wanted-at-that-moment. Maybe my propagandization was a bit overkill, but the message got through. My four year truly saw water as a gift.
Maybe you could learn something from my four year old. Maybe you didn’t know that 1 in 9 people don’t have access to clean water. Maybe you didn’t know that women around the world spend 40 billion hours a year getting water. Maybe you didn’t know that every minute a child dies from water-related diseases. Maybe today you got in the shower, made your baby’s bottle of formula, cooked your family dinner, washed your hands, and stayed alive thanks to your access to clean water...and didn’t even recognize it as a gift. (Welcome to the club.)
