NORAH: ON GROWING UP IN UGANDA + SUDDEN POVERTY + EXPERIENCING AND HAVING COMPASSION

So it’s official - this is my absolute favorite interview I’ve ever done. I have to preface it by sharing that there were some technical difficulties on my end and the audio was disappointing for me on such an amazing episode. I share that to say please, please hang in there anyways because Norah and her story is just SUCH a gift! Now…let me tell you a little bit about her so that you can get to listening. To borrow from her bio found on Compassion’s site, “Norah Senkaba Birungi is resiliency embodied.” She is the youngest of 6 six children raised in Kampala, Uganda at the height of the civil conflict in the region. Her life was changed drastically when her father was killed while serving in the Rwandan army. But her story doesn’t end there - her was astronomically changed again by Compassion International and we talk all about what that looked like and why she needed it. We chat her story overall, trauma she experienced (and still does today), how she found hope in the midst of poverty and loss, and how you too can sponsor and serve a child through Compassion. You do not want to miss this one!

  • The intro song, The Source, is brought to you by one of the best new worship bands out there, The Evidence. Yes, the frontman is my (talented, brilliant, adorable, Jesus-loving) cousin. No, that's not why I love them.

  • We have a partnership with Compassion because we trust the way they work. When I invest $38 every month, I know that 80% of that is being spent specifically for the development of the little boy we sponsor. Compassion doesn’t give money directly to children, because they know that just handing out money isn’t going to make a long-term impact. But spending that money wisely for nutrition and healthcare and education – teaching boys and girls to grow up and escape  poverty – that makes a huge difference. And Compassion does it all through local churches around the world.

So we have a goal of finding new sponsors for more children with this podcast, and I think we’re actually going to blow that goal away.

We’ve made it really simple for you. You have two options. The first is that right now, even as you are listening, you can open up a text and send the word REALMOM to 83393. You are going to get a text back with a picture of a child and a link. Click that link and follow the steps to start sponsoring. It’s super simple.

The second option is also easy, and we’re even adding some extra bonus content from this episode to a webpage. If you go to compassion.com/realmom you can see bonus video from this episode with more of my conversation, and then you can choose exactly which boy or girl you want to sponsor.

And bonus, friends, they want to give you a free gift when you start sponsoring. When you sign up as a sponsor, Compassion is going to send you a copy of an advent book for children. It’s 25 Days of the Christmas Story, by Dr. Josh and Christi Straub.

  • Norah shares in this episode about Focus on the Family’s podcast and how she loves watching/listening on YouTube. We’ve got the episode with Lysa TerKeurst here for you that she shares about!

  • Who doesn’t love Hillsong? Norah shares about how she loves the worship here in America and her go to is Hillsong.
